Day 1: Morning pickup in Anchorage, Chugach State Park and National Forest Hike - Kenai Peninsula
Our guide and driver will meet you at a designated location in Anchorage this morning at 10 a.m. Today’s activity is a wonderful introductory nature hike, where you’ll learn about Alaska’s unique flora and fauna. This warm-up outing will be more casual today, with opportunities to take excellent photos. The route will lead around Turnagain Arm (where you may have the chance to spot bald eagles or elusive beluga whales) and then winds through the beautiful snowcapped mountains of the Chugach National Forest.
Upon arrival at Kenai Riverside Lodge this afternoon, you’ll enjoy a tour of the lodge grounds before being shown to your private cabin. You’ll learn more about the lodge operations and details of tomorrow’s activities at dinner.Overnight: Kenai Riverside Lodge. (D)

Day 2: Kenai National Wildlife Refuge
From the launch site on the Kenai River, you will gear up for a scenic raft trip into the heart of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. On this class II, casual stretch of river, you access stunning backcountry sights and protected wilderness areas.Nearly two million acres in size, Kenai National Wildlife Refuge is characterized by its diverse habitats and wildlife. In fact, the Refuge is considered by many visitors to represent Alaska in miniature. The dense vegetation on the banks of the river provides excellent habitat for moose. The biggest bull moose can be 7 1⁄2 feet tall at the shoulders, weigh 1800 lbs. and have antlers that span more than 6 feet.
Along the river, during your raft trip, be sure scan for moose, bald eagles, and other bird species and salmon. Your guide will be on the look out. The Kenai River is famous for its salmon and, depending on the time of your visit, you may witness their incredible spawning runs. A delicious picnic lunch will be served along the river or on the shore of Skilak Lake.
In the late afternoon, you will arrive at the remote Kenai Backcountry Lodge, accessible only by boat. The Lodge utilizes a simple but effective hydroelectric power system to provide water and electricity, reducing the need for fossil-fueled power.
Appetizers and dinner will welcome you in the main lodge, followed by evening activities. Relax in the outdoor gazebo or enjoy a casual stroll along an established nature path.

Extra Info
Skill Level — Easy
For hiking and kayaking options available throughout your stay, local expert guides will present to you the most up-to-date trail and kayak route conditions based on weather, tidal patterns, and trail conditions and help you select your top-choice activity, based on your desired activity level for the day. All guided activities require no previous experience. You choose the pace, difficulty level, and activities. Be as active or casual as you like, take a “stop and smell the wildflowers” approach to your hiking one day, and the next go for elevation gain and hike to the alpine tundra. Most casual guided activities will involve covering 3-5 miles roundtrip by foot or kayak, with minimal elevation gain, and at a casual pace. Moderate to challenging options generally entail a more brisk pace and can cover up to 6-12+ miles of terrain, including open-water crossings on sea kayaking adventures; hikes will generally reach under 2,000 ft. elevation gain over sea level, though excellent vistas can be achieved even at lower elevations.
Airport Info
Fly to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC), located 5 miles southwest of downtown Anchorage.
Local Travel
A driver will personally meet you in Anchorage at a time specified for you upon confirmation of your reservation and will transfer you to your first accommodation. At the end of your tour, after your wildlife cruise to Seward, you will travel back to Anchorage via the Alaska Railroad. If you want to arrive a day or two earlier in Anchorage, travel from the airport to your accommodations is your responsibility. Taxis are readily available and will cost $17 to $22 one way. You can also take the city bus, People Mover. The Route 40 bus travels between the downtown transit center (6th ave, between H and G streets) and the domestic (south) terminal hourly. Monday through Friday the service starts around 6:00 am and ends at midnight. On Saturdays, it runs between 8 am and 8 pm, and on Sundays between 10 am and 6 pm. The fare is just $2.
Climate
The most reliable advice is to be prepared for any type of weather. Summer in Alaska begins in June and lasts through early September. Often, during this time frame, you will experience temperatures between the 40s and 60s but it could be warmer or cooler (especially in early June and September). You should plan for at least one day of rain. The Alaskan summer is similar to spring or fall in other parts of the country. When your gear is appropriate, and spirits are well-suited, the weather is always perfect. Each month has its features - June’s daylight, July’s flowers, August’s berries, September’s fall colors, and northern lights - so there’s always a “best time!” Please do check the local conditions before your arrival.
Remarks
Your Alaska adventure features a focus on ecotourism, a means of protection for remote wild areas, through sound and sustainable economic development.
Our partner has developed a method for evaluating and minimizing the lodgings’ impact on the environment. This method is called the “Greenworks Program.” Each lodge has established high standards to minimize the impact on the environment.
At the Backcountry lodge, the strategic construction of a solar panel array and micro-hydro power generation system utilizes the power of Alaska’s midnight sun and a nearby creek to lessen dependence on generators. The solar panels provide the vast majority of the power that charge the lodge’s battery bank while water from the creek moves a small turbine which trickle charges the bank before returning to its natural path into Skilak Lake.
In cooperation with our partner, you will be contributing to promoting the quiet beauty of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge and all of Alaska’s wild places!Important to know
Covid Conscious Travel
Guest Vaccine Information
To safeguard your personal health along with the investment of time and money toward your vacation, It is highly recommended qualifying travelers who are eligible for a Covid vaccine to be fully vaccinated and boosted by the time they arrive in Alaska. Properly fitted masks are still advisable during parts of the trip where social distancing may be limited, such as on board our touring vehicles and vessels, though masking is optional.
If any guests become ill during any point of the trip or lodge stay, staff will follow its guest care protocols based upon the unique needs of the situation. Guests feeling under the weather may be required to be seen by nearest qualified medical professionals and cleared by a physician before returning to the trip; costs and additional arrangements of medical care while on trip are the responsibility of our guests. We highly recommend travel insurance.
Cuisine
Meals are a highlight of your Alaskan adventure and highly skilled and imaginative cooks emphasize freshness and flavor. From delicious Alaskan seafood to homemade breads to decadent desserts you will be amazed at how well you can eat in the wilderness!
Packing list
Luggage: Due to the small-scale, remote nature of the lodges, it is better to utilize soft-sided luggage or duffel bags. The vehicles and boats have limited luggage compartments and, for your convenience, the staff hand-carry luggage to your accommodations. Therefore we ask that you pack with this in mind and limit your baggage to one large, soft-sided bag.
Daypack: Your luggage will not always be accessible during travel so bring a day pack for any items that you will want to have at hand at all times. This will come in handy for day hiking and van travel. This is not a frame pack but a smaller daypack variety with two shoulder straps that you can opt to carry on your back and large enough to hold rain gear, an extra sweater, water bottle, lunch, binoculars, and anything else you would take on a day hike.
Hiking boots or shoes: Please bring your well broken in comfortable, lightweight, and water repellent hiking shoes. If you prefer strenuous hiking, you may want to invest in rugged hiking boots. You should put a coat of waterproofing compound on your boots or shoes before arriving in Alaska.
Rain gear: During kayak excursions, group canoe paddles, and explorations on foot, a good quality rain suit (both top and bottom) is a must to keep you warm and dry. There are rain suits available at the lodges, but most guests prefer to bring their own gear. Rain suits should be made of coated nylon with factory-sealed seams. The expensive Gore-tex variety is not really necessary; however, you may opt for this if you think you may have use for it again. Heavy rubberized rain gear will keep you dry, but it is bulky and weighty to carry. Please do NOT bring a plastic or vinyl rain suit or poncho; these tend to tear easily and quickly become useless when hiking and rafting.
Water bottle or hydration pack: One-quart water bottle or hydration pack for each person. Clean, potable water is available at all lodge locations. Our partner is a plastic water bottle-free company. Please help reduce plastic waste by bringing your own water bottle.
Small flashlight or headlamp
Insect repellant: Creams and pumps are more environmentally friendly than aerosols.
Any specialty gear – such as personal flotation devices, kayak skirts, paddles, and rain gear – will be provided for you at each lodge.
*Please note that there are no laundry facilities available at the wilderness lodges.
