Following an early breakfast, a brief 15-minute drive takes you to Ollantaytambo train station where you'll board a train. Upon arrival at Chachabamba, proceed to check in with park rangers before beginning the memorable hike along the Inca Trail. Following the path, you'll first reach the well-preserved remains of Wiñay Wayna (2900 m.a.s.l), where you'll find waterfalls, native flora, and mountain birds. Following lunch, take a moment to rest and discover the site, adorned with houses, terraces, and towers. Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Refugio Amazonas Lodge
Upon arrival from Lima or Cusco, you’ll be welcomed at the airport in Puerto Maldonado. After a short drive to headquarters, amidst the forest gardens, you’ll pack only essential gear for the next few days, leaving the rest in the safe deposit to keep the boats light. Another short drive will transport you to the Tambopata River Port. A one-hour boat ride along the Tambopata River will bring you to Refugio Amazonas. Upon arrival, the lodge manager will provide an orientation followed by dinner. Later, you’ll have the opportunity to search for caiman along the river's edge, guided by the red gleams of caiman eyes reflecting in the night. (L, D)Day 2: Parrot Clay Lick - Lake Condenado
Following an early breakfast, witness the natural phenomena as large macaws and parrots gather at the clay licks along the riverbank, creating a colorful sight against the backdrop of the dawn sky. Admire the brilliant plumage of Green-winged, Scarlet, and Blue-and-gold Macaws, accompanied by a variety of smaller parrot species, as they descend to ingest clay. Return to the lodge for lunch before a visit to Lake Condenado, where the hoatzin and Shansho birds may be spotted. Your time in the rainforest ends today. Following breakfast, you’ll board a boat from Refugio Amazonas to Tambopata River Port. From there, you'll transfer to Puerto Maldonado Headquarters and return to the airport in Puerto Maldonado, concluding your journey with a retraced river and road route. Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Reserva Amazonica Lodge
Upon arriving in Puerto Maldonado, you will be greeted for a private transfer to the boarding wharf, 15 minutes from the airport. Begin your rainforest experience with a 45-minute boat ride along the Madre de Dios River to reach Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica Lodge. Following a brief welcome, your cabaña awaits. You might take a siesta, indulge in a refreshing tea time, and prepare for the afternoon excursion. Your Inkaterra Explorer Guide will help you choose from 14 different excursions, but for the first day, a guided walk along the trail system is recommended. Here, you’ll be introduced to the forest environment with opportunities for bird watching and observing rainforest insects. In the evening, consider the Twilight River excursion, where you'll witness the transition from diurnal to nocturnal wildlife. After dinner, retire to your cabana or share your rainforest experience with fellow guests and interpreters while listening to the jungle's intriguing sounds at night. (L, D)Day 2: Sandoval Lake – Canopy Walkway
The day begins with an excursion on Lake Sandoval within Tambopata National Reserve. Glide across the tranquil oxbow lake in a wooden canoe, marveling at the mirrored surface as you keep an eye out for endangered giant river otters, red howler monkeys, and red-bellied macaws. With luck, you might catch sight of anacondas, side-neck turtles, or black caimans. After lunch back at the lodge, rest and prepare for your afternoon adventure.An awe-inspiring journey awaits on the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway. As you ascend 29 meters above the forest floor, you'll visit the treetop realm, crossing a network of suspension bridges that connect eight observation platforms. Be on the lookout for colorful toucans, woodpeckers, and trogons as they dart through the canopy, while monkeys and sloths sway in the branches below. For an added treat, opt to extend your excursion to view the sunset from one of the towers. As evening falls, return to the lodge to unwind with a daily nature presentation at the Eco Center followed by Happy Hour (B, L, D)
Day 3: Gamitana River – Hacienda Conception
Following breakfast, take a leisurely walk to Gamitana Creek, exploring the rainforest along the winding creek, home to piranhas, caimans, turtles, and birds. Arriving at the "Sanipanga" embarkation point, board a canoe for a one-hour journey to the Gamitana Model Farm, observing the diverse flora and fauna along the way. Join a brief guided walk to visit the Amazon model farm, where you'll be able to make plantain flour.In the afternoon, discover Hacienda Concepcion, boasting over 200 plant species. After learning about the uses and benefits of local flora, take a 30-minute canoe trip to spot turtles, sungrebes, nightjars, and exotic herons. Returning to the lodge, you may consider the Rainforest by Night excursion through the Inkaterra Ecological Reserve. Here’s your chance to uncover the mysteries of nocturnal animal activity in the rainforest, listening to forest sounds and spotting species that emerge only at night. (B, L, D)
Day 4: Reserva Amazonica Lodge - Puerto Maldonado
Before departure, savor a full breakfast. A 45-minute return trip by boat on the Madre de Dios River transports you to Puerto Maldonado, where if you didn’t have the chance to stop upon arrival, you can visit Inkaterra Butterfly House. Peru is home to the greatest variety of butterflies globally, boasting 3,700 known species. The Butterfly House showcases the diversity, beauty, and adaptability of these captivating insects. Following your visit, return to the airport for your departure home. (B)
Tour extension: Arequipa to Colca Canyon
A visit to Arequipa, known as the "White City" due to its dazzling buildings constructed from volcanic stone, offers a blend of colonial charm, stunning architecture, and beautiful natural landscapes. Additionally, a trip to Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world, promises awe-inspiring scenery, opportunities to witness the majestic Andean condor, and encounters with traditional Andean culture, including visits to remote villages.
Day 1: Arrival to Arequipa
Upon arrival in Arequipa, you will be transferred to the hotel. In the afternoon, enjoy a historical sightseeing tour of Arequipa. You’ll start by exploring the colonial districts of St. Lazarus and Yanahuara. Next, you'll visit the Monastery of St. Catherine, a beautiful religious site that was home to the nuns of the Dominican Second Order for nearly 400 years. Although once closed to the public, it now welcomes visitors, offering narrow alleyways, a peaceful plaza, and gardens reminiscent of ancient Seville or Granada. Take in the serene atmosphere and enjoy the surroundings. Finally, you'll head to Arequipa's main square, Plaza de Armas, where you'll see the Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa, with a history dating back to the 1500s. Despite being rebuilt multiple times due to earthquakes and fires, it remains a remarkable landmark. Day 2: Arequipa - Colca Canyon
In the early morning, embark on a scenic 4-hour bus journey to the Colca Canyon, one of the world's deepest canyons (3180 mts.). Along the way, you’ll traverse Pampa Cañahuas in the Aguada Blanca National Reserve, home to herds of vicuñas and alpacas (South American cameloids). You’ll also view stunning pre-Columbian terraces still cultivated by native Collaguas. Upon arrival in the Colca Valley, bikes await at Patapampa, "The Viewpoint of the Volcanoes," at 4,900 meters. Descend to Chivay at 3,600 meters, passing by scenic views and pre-Inca terraces and pausing to admire the views and take photos. This afternoon, take time to rest and acclimate to the altitude. Day 3: Colca Canyon - Cruz del Condor - Arequipa
To witness the majestic Condor, your day begins at 5 am. Breakfast will be served at the hotel, and by 6 am, you'll head towards the "Cruz del Condor", a natural lookout point offering amazing views of Condors soaring over the canyon. En route, marvel at the spectacular canyon vistas and ancient agricultural terraces etched into the mountainsides. The local people's livelihood revolves around agriculture, evident in the fields teeming with crops like potatoes, corn, barley, and other native Peruvian products (depending on the season). Riding along Colca Canyon's edge, you’ll pass by quaint communities and the mighty Colca River. Lunch will be served in the village of Chivay before heading back to Arequipa. Day 4: Departure from Arequipa

An unforgettable day tour through the South Valley along the new route via Cusipata leads to the renowned Vinicunca Mountain. Unlike typical routes, the Cusipata path leads through a different valley, providing a quieter experience away from crowds. It's a great opportunity to enjoy local villages and stunning mountain views.
The day begins following breakfast with a picturesque drive towards Puno. Veering off onto unpaved roads towards Cusipata Village you’ll eventually reach Llaqto, where your adventure truly begins. Here, you'll meet the horses and muleteers, who will accompany you for the hike.
From Llaqto, the trek towards Rainbow Mountain features views of alpacas, llamas, and the stunning Inca and Huasaqocha snowcap mountains. After a hike of about an hour and a half, you'll arrive at Vinicuna, known for its vibrant rock layers showcasing hues of turquoise, orange, brown, and red.
Next, you’ll explore the nearby Red Valley, a hidden gem nestled in the rugged terrain. Here, the landscape takes on a fiery hue. Descending back to Llaqto, enjoy a picnic lunch amidst the majestic scenery.
The day ends with a private transport back to Cusco.

Cycling from Yuncaypata, 6.2 miles (10 km)
Your guide will meet you at your hotel Cusco and transport you to Yuncaypata. From there, the biking adventure begins with a downhill and flat ride through stunning forests, visiting local communities along the way. After a short break, the journey continues through the wilderness with views of Inkilltambo (Inca Jail). The ride descends further to Rumiwasi and concludes at Enaco - San Sebastian. A van will be waiting there to transport you back to the hotel.
Duration: 2.5 hours with 1.5 hours of cycling

Departing from Cusco, your journey begins in Tipon, where you'll cycle along a scenic path to the colonial town of Oropesa, known for producing much of the bread consumed in Cusco today. Continuing on, you'll head to the Huacarpay Lagoon, a haven for various bird species and surrounded by archaeological sites. After exploring the area, you'll enjoy a panoramic view of the lagoon before cycling onward to Lucre Village. Here, the van driver awaits to return you to Cusco.Duration: 5 hours with 2 hours of cycling.

The tour begins and ends in Cusco. The most common way to reach Cusco is via a connecting flight, usually through Lima, to Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport.
Tour Extensions-
Amazon Jungle, Refugio Amazonas & Inkaterra Amazon: To reach Tambopata National Reserve, you’ll need to fly to Puerto Maldonado (PEM). The most direct route is from Lima with the flight lasting appx. 1 hour and 40 minutes.
Arequipa to Colca Canyon: The quickest way to reach Arequipa is via a flight from Cusco. There are daily flights available from Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport in Cusco to Rodríguez Ballón International Airport in Arequipa. The flight takes approximately 1 hour.

Amazon Jungle, Refugio Amazonas: Upon arrival at the airport, you will be welcomed and escorted to the lodge. This journey entails a one-hour drive followed by a one-hour boat ride along the Tambopata River. It’s important to arrive before 3 pm to avoid traveling at night as the boat trips offer wildlife sightings, including capybara, caiman, and possibly jaguars along the Tambopata River.
Amazon Jungle, Inkaterra Amazon: Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, you will be greeted at the airport and shuttled to the river port for a 45-minute boat ride to the lodge, located at Kilometer 15, on the left bank of the Madre de Dios River.
Arequipa to Colca Canyon: Upon arrival at the airport, you will be greeted for a private transfer to your hotel.
Climate
Cusco has a mild climate with distinct dry (May to October) and wet (November to April) seasons. Daytime temperatures range from 54°F to 68°F (12°C to 20°C), with colder nights, especially during the dry season. The weather in Machu Picchu is similar to Cusco, however, Machu Picchu tends to be slightly warmer and more humid with frequent rain showers.
