Overview
This guided tour in Portugal is so much more than a birding tour!
Predominantly rural, the region of Alentejo, though the largest, is the least populated, thus the perfect area for observing birds. Add dark sky star gazing, hiking, and wild food foraging, and you have a tour with delightful variety.
You will search for some of the most emblematic bird species of the country in a variety of landscapes and habitats. The impressive cliffs of the Portas do Ródao harbors one of Europe's largest birds: the gargoyle-like Griffon Vulture. You will also seek out threatened bird species, such as the Black Stork, the Eagle Owl, and the Egyptian Vulture.
One day is set aside for hiking, and, as you walk the sleepy countryside, you also learn about and search for medicinal, edible, and aromatic herbs and other plants. A barbeque at a local farm will feature your finds. The evening is crowned with brilliance as you dark sky stargaze in one of the least light-polluted parts of Europe.
The itinerary provides ample free time to wander and explore the streets and alleyways of ancient, whitewashed villages, and your nights are spent in historic pousadas.
