Three countries, three cultures, and a wonderful Mediterranean climate are waiting for you in the Rhine rift between the Alps, the Black Forest, and the Vosges. The blending of these cultures has richly enhanced this region to the benefit of all, with a distinctive cuisine and superb wines. You will be able to spend time in the idyllic villages of Freiburg, Colmar, Basel, and Mulhouse.
Wine production has been the mainstay for the locals for centuries and the expertise and success have built prosperous and colorful villages. Come and cycle your way through this unique and picturesque region and experience the Rhine, wine, and culture!

All distances are approximate. The above-planned itinerary is subject to change due to changing wind and weather conditions and other unforeseen circumstances having to do with mooring requirements, safe navigation, etc.
Day 1: Freiburg
Day 2: Freiburg - Colmar, 37 mi. (60 km)
Day 3: Colmar - Guebwiller, 22 or 28 mi. (35 or 45 km)
Day 4: Guebwiller - Mulhouse area, 22 or 31 mi. (35 or 50 km)
Day 5: Mulhouse area - Basel area, 34 mi. (55 km)
Day 6: Basel area - Müllheim, 28 mi. (45 km)
Day 7: Müllheim - Freiburg, 22 mi. (35 km)
Day 8: DepartureDay 1: Freiburg
Arrival in Freiburg and check-in at the hotels. You then have the opportunity for sightseeing for the rest of the day.Day 2: Freiburg - Colmar, 37 mi. (60 km)
Cycling the "Beisgau-Radweg" bike path towards the border town of Breisach, along the Rhine River. The imposing 13th century Breisach Cathedral towers over the bank of the Rhine. You will cross the Rhine to the French side to Neuf- Brisach in Alsace. This is a 17th century Vauban stronghold, UNESCO World Heritage, and octagonal fortified town. The day ends wonderfully in beautiful Colmar, one of the most delightful cities on the Alsace Wine Route. You may take the opportunity to visit its historic center and the Unterlinden Museam that houses the masterpiece artwork Issenheim Altarpiece.Day 3: Colmar - Guebwiller, 22 or 28 mi. (35 or 45 km)
From Colmar, you follow the Alsace Wine Route to Guebwiller. Unwind and enjoy relaxing in the dreamy wine-growing village with the many Alsatian timber-frame houses. This magnificent medieval town centres in the midst of extensive vineyards. You will also cycle through the lovely villages of Turkheim, Equisheim, and Rouffach. A highlight for the day will be seeing the richest and most influential of the the Holy Roman Empire, the abbey of Murbach.Day 4: Guebwiller - Mulhouse area, 22 or 31 mi. (35 or 50 km)
From Guebwiller, you ride to Ungersheim to view the Écomusée d’Alsace. This is a museum organized like a 20th century Alsatian village. From there, the cycle path guides you directly to Mulhouse. The largest automobile collection in the world and the Rail & Electricity Museum will inspire everyone, not just technology fans.Day 5: Mulhouse area - Basel area, 34 mi. (55 km)
The cycle path leads you along the Rhone-Rhine Canal on EuroVelo 6 to Illfurth. Then you will cycle through little villages, beautiful lanscapes to the at the most southern end of the Alsace, in the area called Sundgau. You end your cycle day reaching the Swiss city of Basel, known for is artistic features and culture.Day 6: Basel area - Müllheim, 28 mi. (45 km)
You will begin your day cycling north along the Rhine River and the scenic wine region between the Rhine and the Black Forest Mountains towards Müllheim. The Markgräfler Museum and St. Martin's Church with its 14th century frescoes are located here. You may choose to visit Badenweiler to visit its castle and the remains of the Roman baths.Day 7: Müllheim - Freiburg, 22 mi. (35 km)
After the visit to the Villa Urbana and the Malteserschloss, the castle of the Order of Malta, in Heitersheim. In the treasure chest of Bad Krozingen, located at the gateway to the Black Forest Mountains, the mineral and thermal springs await you. Then, you will finish up your day cycling to Freiburg, in the heart of Breisgau.Day 8: Departure or extend your stay

You will cycle to Mulhouse through lush woodland and along the canal to the Rhine. As you pedal across to the German banks, you will be welcomed by the old fortress at Neuenburg. Next you will continue onward to the foot of the Black Forest to picturesque Müllheim.Day 6: Müllheim - Freiburg, 22 mi. (35 km)

Skill Level — Easy–Moderate
This is an easy to moderate self-guided bike tour between mountains and vineyards. The route follows cycle paths, tarred roads, and secondary roads with little traffic outside the towns and villages. More traffic is naturally encountered entering and exiting towns and villages. There are a few days that have a little more hills to climb. Shorter route - 1 day is a little hilly. Longer route - 2 days are a little hilly.

Local Travel
From the EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (Basel Airport, Switzerland), you can take a bus, shuttle, taxi or train to Freiburg, Germany. This is about an hour trip from the airport to Freiburg, Germany.
Frankfurt and Zurich Airports are about a 2-3 hour train ride away from the city Freiburg, Germany. Frankfurt Airport has frequent direct rail connections to Freiburg almost every hour from the Frankfurt Flughafen Fernbahnhof train station.
