Leafde fan Fryslân Bike & Sail the IJsselmeer
Netherlands
It is difficult to highlight one part of the trip as the whole experience was excellent. I have done bike/boat tours before and the accommodation on this historic ship was by far the best ever. The rural scenery in the Netherlands is extraordinarily beautiful and the Issjelmeer is stunning. Actually, perhaps the best thing was the staff. We felt like personal guests on this trip and as if the staff were long time personal or family friends. The organization was informal but efficient and the food was home cooked and excellent. There was a variety of activities from cycling to sailing; exploring historic villages and towns and swimming in the sea. Best ever trip.

Prague to Dresden - A Tale of Two Rivers
Czech Republic, Germany
The Prague to Dresden bike ride was an amazing vacation. Everyday there were beautiful sites and scenery that made the journey a really memorable trip. Each night we lodged in picturesque towns along the route and always near the city square where we enjoyed great dining and sightseeing. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a really unique biking vacation in the heart of Europe.

Berlin to Malchin
Germany, Poland
The most memorable part of our bike and barge trip from Malchin to Berlin was the day we biked on the Isle of Usedom. The landscape was beautiful, the beach front area was full of interesting shops and restaurants where we ate spaghetti ice, a childhood favorite treat of my husband. He has waited years to share this moment with our kids. We topped off the day with a swim in the Baltic Sea which was full of big waves and surrounded by soft, white sand.

Thank you for your review. I went on a tour from Amsterdam to Brugges.
It was rated EASY and was NOT because some days the biking was
40 miles on fat tire bikes. I cannot get an explanation as to why this trip has an easy/moderate rating? Are there long hills??
I'm debating if I should go and if I do rent and e-bike.
I do hope to hear from you

Merlijn Berlin to Malchin
Germany, Poland
One of my favorite parts of the trip was jumping off the boat into the canal. It was the end of a long, fun day of bike riding. The canal was clear and perfect for jumping. Everyone jumped off and everyone did fun tricks. The funniest was when Paul fell off and I never could keep a straight face around him again (Paul didn't get hurt except his pride btw). Captain Henk even put down a ladder to make climbing to the dock easier.

Cycling past the remnants of the Iron Curtain. WOW!
There were so many highlights, but having Axel as our guide certainly added a great deal to our daily rides. Thanks Axel!

Magnifique III Bruges to Amsterdam
Belgium, Netherlands
The entire barge and bike trip was superlative! But what impressed me the most biking and barging aboard the Magnifique besides the excellent accommodations, great and varied food, breathtaking scenery, and cultural stops, was the professionalism of the staff. The Bruges to Amsterdam crew of six were constantly working to make our week safe, enjoyable, and deplete of any hitches. If you have never even thought of a trip like this because you deemed it too adventurous, please reconsider! The 30 miles per day of riding were pretty easy even for a casual rider, and for anyone who has concerns about “keeping up” or has some physical limitations, e- bikes were available that leveled the playing field. I think that biking through a country really gives you an appreciation and in-depth feeling you would never get by touring more traditionally. And all those calories burned allows more ingestion of Belgium’s famous chocolates and fries! Absolutely loved this trip!

Magnifique III Bruges to Amsterdam
Belgium, Netherlands
Magnifique III was so much better than imagined. Great looking barge inside & out! Dining room glowed, friendly bar, wonderful creative chef. I’m a “foodie” and never expected such fresh delicious meals. Room accommodations small neat clean would have liked little more room so 2 people could unpack their suitcases.
Staff was friendly attentive and did their jobs efficiently. Bike trip was well planned, I personally would have liked to have been able to stop a few more times to enjoy scenery surroundings & picturesque small towns.
I recommend a bike/barge trip through Tripsite... I would consider another!

Around Lake Constance

Most memorable thing from our Lake Konstanz trip?? How in the world do I pick?? The Biergartens? Picnics in medieval towns? Watching World Cup with locals in small family cafés? The acres of apple orchards? Seeing zeppelins flying over crystal blue water? Feeling the thunder of Rhein Falls? Getting lost and finding amazing parks and kind people? It was the BEST vacation we’ve ever had, and we’re already talking about which one to do next year!

Bavarian Lakes
Germany
From forest paths at the outskirts of Munich to steep gravel trails en route to the source of the Isar, the tour featured a mind-blowing range of scenery and terrain. We pedaled more than 300 km in five days. Just one rainy day; we had to imagine the approach to Garmisch-Partenkirchen would've been all the more impressive under clear skies! Our bikes were custom made for touring, with seamless gear shifting and panniers. We built a couple of rest days into the schedule (we're by no means Tour de France contenders) but on a "day off" I got back on the horse and did a loop through the rolling forests and farms between Bad Tölz and the lakeside town of Bad Wiessee, on sparkling Tegernsee, a favourite of kitesurfers. By the final stage, Bad Tölz to Munich, the Alps had receded but the spectacular landscapes continued: woods, ravines and the crystal clear Isar River never far from our puncture-resistant tires. An amazing experience.

Highlights of Dalmatia E-Bike & Boat
Croatia
The e-bikes are brilliant! We had never used e-bikes before, but they are high quality bikes, very comfortable with comfortable saddles, easy to operate and maneuver, not at all cumbersome, with a quiet engine. You can use the pedal assist as much or as little as you like, so you can get a totally natural, high calorie-burn biking experience, or an almost effortless ‘glide’ up gorgeous hills! The guests on our tour were all different ages and fitness levels, with different biking experience, and we all loved the e-bikes. We were all able to do the Read More rides the way we wanted, at the pace we wanted – it was so flexible and made riding a joy.
The crew and guides were fantastic! We had a crew of 8 plus 2 guides, for 13 guests. Everyone was friendly and attentive, while also being very sensitive to giving us the space to relax and truly be on holiday. Our rooms were beautifully cared for, so they were calm retreats when we came back from our bike rides. It was inspiring to see the captain and sailors’ skillful work sailing and docking the ship. Theo was always on hand to help us with anything we needed and share insights about local cuisine. We felt so comfortable and cared for.
A particular highlight was the food. One of us was vegetarian and the other a meat-eater, and we were both incredibly impressed with the food. It was high quality, imaginative, varied and delicious – way better than either of us had hoped – a true highlight.
Our guides, Ivana and Meine were wonderful people to spend time with, so knowledgeable and confident about every detail of the tour. Everything was very well organized, without feeling regimented. They were excellent at explaining the bikes, the routes, and at flexing around our needs and adjusting to the weather to make sure we had a wonderful experience. They were always there and happy to help and answer questions. One Croatian, one Dutch, both with excellent English and German, they brought a wealth of experience and could connect with everybody.
The ship, the New Star, was extremely comfortable and well designed. It is brand new, spotless, with a luxury feel. It is really big – especially for the low number of guests we had – so plenty of places to relax – either in groups, or alone / in a couple, as you wish. Cabins were very comfortable - extremely well air-conditioned (a delight after a sunny bike ride), sizeable, with everything you need, including sinks big enough to do quick hand-washing (You can dry things in a couple of hours in the sun, on the clothes lines under the deck railings).
We’ve never been on a bike trip before, but are very impressed with Island Hopping. The company has been doing this for twenty years and you can tell – they really understand what makes a great experience for guests. All the connections / docking / links to city tours etc were very easy (it’s true the Port in Dubrovnik is a little distance from the old town, but there’s an easy bus connection) and the tour has great variety – different types and lengths of ride, with a rest day in the middle to explore and swim at gorgeous waterfalls!
Before we arrived, we were a bit worried by the heat in July, but there is often a lovely breeze across the sea, and the speed you can go up hills on the e-bikes meant we were rarely too hot. The tour guest numbers tend to be lower in July and August, so that can actually be a real benefit. We also know this tour is one of the pricier ones, but it includes the bike rental, and felt worth every penny – the boat, food, level of service – everything was top quality.
We are looking at another trip and will definitely go with Island Hopping again. Thank you for a great experience, Island Hopping!

Magnifique III Amsterdam to Bruges
Netherlands, Belgium
Although this was a bike-barge trip, I did not bike; rather, I stayed on the barge each day as it progressed along the rivers and canals. It was very pleasant and relaxing watching the scenery. Each day I was able to disembark at least once prior to arrival at the destination for the night to walk around nearby towns or along paths. The crew was extremely gracious and accommodating to my presence on the barge.

It would be difficult to pick one specific memory as the most significant. I loved the companionship of my fellow riders. I recall one beautiful afternoon as we rode through countryside reminiscent of a Van Gogh painting. I was impressed by the open friendly manner of the local people in the small towns through which we rode.

Magnifique II Bruges to Amsterdam
Belgium, Netherlands
Everything was fantastic. Each day they gave route instructions. I tried to follow along with the instructions with the ride, but in reality, I would have missed several turns if I had not stayed with the group. So even though theoretically, you can do self-guided, I think in reality it would have been a mistake. I believe the first day the route guidance indicated some photo places that we did not stop at. Either the guide didn't want to, or we had gone a slightly different route. I do think the guides modified the routes slightly based on wind, riders etc. But all in all FABULOUS trip - thoroughly enjoyed it.

Ave Maria Bolzano-Mantova-Venice
Italy
We loved the beautiful, amazing mountain scenery (with very few hills) of the first three days. The written instructions, though, are of a badness difficult to describe. We rated the tour 4/5, and the lost star were because of the extremely poor instructions. If we hadn't had maps and stickers on sign posts, we wouldn't have been able to make it through. The frustration really distracted from the overall enjoyment of the trip - an English speaker with an accurate odometer really needs to rewrite the directions. For example, they talked about "crossing a railway" (or maybe a "railway bridge"), so we spent about 20 minutes trying to find a way to cross the railway - but really it meant to pass underneath an elevated railway crossing. Also, the symbol used to indicate a warning (I think of a turn easy to miss) is a hand pointing to the right. One not unnaturally assumes that this means a right turn. It does not.
Otherwise the barge, scenery, activities, food, and guides are all exactly what we hoped for and have experienced on earlier trips. No problems with luggage transfers, and the hotels for the first part of the trip were all great.

New Star Highlights of Dalmatia E-Bike & Boat
Croatia
This is an amazing trip. The ship is brand new. Doesn't feel crowded ever. The places visited are gorgeous. The views are breathtaking. The biking is very doable. No need to be afraid of hills; with these ebikes, most people will be able to do them. Plenty of time to explore ports and villages. It's hard to get lost during bike rides. Not too many bathroom facilities along the route, but every village has a number of cafes and restaurants that will let you use facilities. Bring sunscreen and good sunglasses. Ivana and Matjia, our guides, were fantastic--very accommodating. Be prepared for some improvisation, since wind conditions may force captain to alter route. Dubrovnik is nice, though too crowded, and the ship moors a bit far (30 minute walk). The other cities and towns are more visitable and relaxing, and the ship docks right downtown. Overall, one of the best trips of our lives.

Wending South Holland Tour
Netherlands
Our trip through south Holland was a history lesson with activity all in one. We had the day to enjoy countryside, beautiful gardens, canals and the old brick homes and cities along the way. Each morning we had fresh local baking to start our day and pack a lunch. We enjoyed a wonderful three course supper every evening experiencing different cuisines and fresh local produce. Many evenings a history walk was included after supper, finishing the day with some information on the city we were near. The week went by too quickly. ( I would recommend bringing earplugs to help sleep as some of the mooring places were noisier than where we live.) All in all a very wonderful holiday, we would do it again.

I feel the bike should have been rated moderate-not easy moderate!
Jehiel from Tripsite • 6 years ago Tripsite Staff
Hi Shirley,
Thanks for submitting this feedback. We try to provide as much information as possible regarding the difficulty rating in the "Skill Level" section above, including daily distances, road conditions, and even vertical climb. It's sometimes hard because there are many variables that factor into rating a tour, including things that vary from person/person. When in doubt, we recommend ample conditioning before your trip or reserving an ebike which allows you to adjust how much assistance you receive from the electric battery. Hope this helps!

Around Lake Constance
Austria, Germany, Switzerland
My dissatisfactions, two nights in the suburbs of Constance, out of the way, should not be used. Konono staff excellent, but cost us for taxi to get there and back to the train. Route book imprecise. What is the route sign we were supposed to follow? What good is a dotted line on a map when there are multiple routes? Which are more scenic? Less hilly? Passing by cafes? Unpaved in a forest? Exactly how do you get to the Rhein Falls ferry? Book never mentioned the three elevators that take you up and down. We had frustrations every day.
Is it a beautiful trip? Absolutely. The Mozart and Park Villa are beautiful hotels, although not air conditioned.
Jehiel from Tripsite • 6 years ago Tripsite Staff
Hi Tama,
Sorry to hear you were dissatisfied with certain aspects of this tour. As far as the hotel locations, we always try to provide the best hotels possible (location, quality, reputation) but this is based on availability. This region is very popular and hotel development hasn't quite caught up with demand.
In reference to the Route Book....we strongly recommend that clients also request GPS tracks to supplement Route Books. The tracks are more interactive and tend to be more precise. If requested, these tracks can be downloaded beforehand and used with a GPS or your smartphone. See this Blog to learn more.
Im glad you still had an enjoyable time and appreciated the beauty of this region. We hope to help you plan your next trip!
